Inside the New ThinkPad T431s

The ThinkPad T Series will soon be getting a new member in the T431s. Available for purchase next month in April, the ThinkPad T431s will highlight a new design, but will still feature many of the traditional components found on ThinkPad branded systems. You’ll see a thinner and lighter laptop. Gone are the optical disc drive and the two click buttons that you typically see. Inside the machine, you’ll find some spec. enhancements.

Besides its new looks, the T431s also has been given some new parts like third-generation Intel processors, up to 12 GB of RAM, and the option to choose between a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD), a solid state drive (SSD), or a hybrid storage system. Though the T431s is designed for corporate use, consumers can also opt to have a fingerprint reader on the side of the keyboard so they can log into their laptops with their fingerprint rather than a password that hackers can crack. Unlike most Ultrabooks, this Lenovo comes with two USB 3.0s ports so you can charge devices even the laptop is turned off, and supports Dolby Home Theater for theater-like sound when you’re kicking back and enjoying a movie. Curiously, the press release says the T431s is “loaded with Windows 7″ but other T-Series laptops offer the option for Windows 8 and even Windows 8 Pro, so you should be able to use the operating system you want with this Ultrabook.

Newly Designed ThinkPad Laptops

Lenovo’s ThinkPad branded product lineup is getting redesigned. Consumers will see a modernized and enhanced look, as well as improved component specifications. A preview of what’s to come was given today in an announcement revealing a new ThinkPad T Series laptop and a new ThinkPad X Series laptops. Check out what else you can expect in the article below:

The ThinkPad T431s isn’t the first ultrabook in the T series — its predecessor, the T430s, took that distinction last year — but it builds on the consumer-oriented changes introduced in the excellent X1 Carbon, and it shows us numerous changes that we’ll likely see diffused across the rest of the ThinkPad line. The first change you’ll notice is that Lenovo has dared to change the color from pure black to “Graphite Black.” Don’t worry — it still has that soft-touch satin finish the ThinkPad line is known for. Lenovo has also meddled with the iconic ThinkPad keyboard: we’re told it’s physically the same as the chiclet one found on the X1 Carbon, but the function keys now default to media and Windows 8-specific actions (unless you enable the Fn lock key) and — thankfully — there’s an option for a backlit keyboard.

ThinkPad T431s is Similar to the ThinkPad X230

While the ThinkPad T431s is an offshoot of the ThinkPad T431, and it has several similarities to the machine, the ThinkPad T431s may actually resemble a ThinkPad X 230 laptop. The designs of both systems are thin and light, and one thing to keep note is that the ThinkPad T431s does not come with an optical drive. This missing component may be a deal breaker for some.

To save weight and space, the T431s does not have Lenovo’s popular Ultrabay port, which comes with an optical drive that can be swapped out for a second battery or hard drive. In 2013 it makes little sense to have a built-in optical drive on a lightweight laptop, but users may miss the optional second battery, which added 3.5 hours to the T430s’s endurance in our tests. Unlike the T431s, which had a removable battery that lasted 5 hours and 9 minutes on our tests, the ThinkPad T431s comes with a built-in, 47-watt hour battery that Lenovo claims will last up to 9 hours.

Differences in ThinkPad T431s & ThinkPad T430

The new ThinkPad T431s is expected to be available for purchase in April 2013. It builds off of a great selling laptop in the ThinkPad T430. The major differences found between these two machines are that the ThinkPad T431 features a handful of new enhancements.

Lenovo’s ThinkPad T431s is both thinner and lighter. Most instances when consumers see the ‘s’ designation appended to the end of a ThinkPad laptop, it means that the system is redesign of a similar model. Gone are the buttons typically found on ThinkPad trackpads and in its place is a single click button, which may or may not turn people off. The bezel around the display has also been reduced, which enlarges the 13.3″ screen to a 14″ one.

The T431s weighs 1.36 kilograms (3 pounds), or 24 percent less than the existing T430s,and it is 20.6 millimeters thick, or 21 percent thinner. It does away with the buttons around the touchpad and has a slightly thinner bezel around the display, and it comes in a lighter shade of black.

With the buttons gone, users now click on areas of a slightly enlarged touchpad to make selections and execute commands. The new ThinkPad still has the little red tracker button in the keyboard, as well as the other main features in existing ThinkPads.

Entry-Level ThinkPad T431s Specifications

The 14-inch T431s Ultrabook ships with an impressive-sounding 1,600 x 900 matte display carrying 250 nits of brightness. Entry level systems will carry an Intel Core i5-3337U processor clocked at 2.7GHz, Intel HD Graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB 5,400 RPM hard drive and your choice of Windows 7 or Windows 8. ThinkPad T430s And T430u Differences

Lenovo’s ThinkPad T Series includes some of the company’s thinnest and lightest business-class laptops. Two popular models are the ThinkPad T430s and the ThinkPad T430u. While these two systems look alike in appearance, they are far from it once you take a closer look at the enclosure used and the specs inside. From the composite used to the components that power both machines, you’ll see that the each ThinkPad was engineered for a specific type of user.

ThinkPad ThinkPad T430u is very thin, much thinner than the Thinkpad T430s and slightly thinner than the ThinkPad X1, but marginally thicker than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad T430u are both considered Ultrabook class laptops, so they must meet the following specification set out by Intel for ultrabooks released after June of 2012.
